Most web applications have a lot of before/after hooks that occur when working with objects: sending a welcome email on registration, incrementing/decrementing counter caches, trigger validation on remote web services. When implemented using callbacks, all these occur without the developer knowing about them. A simple change in one area of the code can have a huge impact somewhere else. Inspiration for this came from http://blog.teksol.info/2010/09/28/unintented-consequences-the-pitfalls-of-activerecord-callbacks.html and http://jamesgolick.com/2010/3/14/crazy-heretical-and-awesome-the-way-i-write-rails-apps.html

ShowOff is a Sinatra web app that reads simple configuration files for a presentation. It is sort of like a Keynote web app engine. I am using it to do all my talks in 2010, because I have a deep hatred in my heart for Keynote and yet it is by far the best in the field. The idea is that you setup your slide files in section subdirectories and then startup the showoff server in that directory. It will read in your showoff.json file for which sections go in which order and then will give you a URL to present from.

Observatory is a simple gem to facilitate loosely-coupled communication between Ruby objects. It implements the observer design pattern so that your objects can publish events that other objects can subscribe to. Observatory provides some syntactic sugar and methods to notify events, filter values and allow observing objects to stop the filter chain. Observatory is inspired by the Event Dispatcher Symfony component.
