The Idea

Are you tired of integrating with services that does not exist yet? Or that are expensive to spin up? Or just want to know what happens whan that service times out or return a ugly error? So you should know RestShifter :) As simples is always better, I've put here a ridiculously easy to run app with no natural behaviour. You just have to create declarative files and start this app.

Instructions

Using

The focus here is in simplicity.

Install rest_shifter

$ gem install rest_shifter

Create the service (you can choose any name that have only letters and underline. It is required to start with a letter )

$ rest_shifter -c hello_world

Start the service

$ rest_shifter -s

Start the service in a different port than 8080

$ rest_shifter -s 7777

Optionally, you can start the service over https using captal "S":

$ rest_shifter -S 4433 /path/to/file.crt /path/to/file.key

Go to a browser and open the url: http://localhost:8080/hello_world

You should see the following JSON:

To edit the service you just created, go to ~/.rest_shifter/flavors/hello_world.flavor The name of the file is the name that you used in the command -c (create).

The file looks like this:

You basically change whatever you need to make it look like the expected or desired service. For example, replacint the path by "/clients", and restart rest_shifter, so you have the desired endpoint working as a rest api.

Whatever you change in the file will change in the service as soon as you restart it.

Using with Docker <3

When using with docker you don't need to add either ruby or the gem itself to your filesystem, you just need to have docker running in your computer.

  $ docker pull camiloribeiro/rest_shifter:latest
  $ docker run -it -v $PWD/spec/flavors:/root/.rest_shifter/flavors -p 8080:8080 camiloribeiro/rest_shifter -s

Access http://localhost:8080/hello_world It should return a 200 ok response status with the json:

  $ { "hello_world" : "Your service is working fine. :D" }

Or you can also run a version in https:

  $ docker run -it -v $PWD/spec/flavors:/root/.rest_shifter/flavors -p 8080:4443 camiloribeiro/rest_shifter -X

Access http://localhost:8080/hello_world

Replace the spec/flavors for a directory where you have your flavor files as described in this document. The container uses rest_shifter as endpoint, so if you want to start in SSL mode, just use -S instead. All the other parameters also work with the docker container entrypoint.

Developing

To develop RestShifter, you are going to need Bundler

$ git git@github.com:camiloribeiro/RestShifter.git
$ cd RestShifter
$ bundle install
$ rake

To run the tests you must use the environment variable RACK_ENV=test

$ RACK_ENV=test rake

Optionally, to have some fun you can run the tests with a nyan cat flying!

$ RACK_ENV=test rake nyan
$
$ --------------------_,------,
$ --------------------_|   /\_/\
$ --------------------^|__( ^ .^)
$ --------------------- " "  " "

The last step is launching the regression tests and all should be green.
