gemi

Gemi is a simple tool for installing gems for multiple rubys. It also can install specific versions of the gems listed in a YAML file.

without gemi, you need to type 'install' for all your rubys:

$ gem install foo bar baz quux
$ gem-1.9 install foo bar baz quux

with gemi, it's just:

$ gemi foo bar baz quux

or even:

$ gemi gems.yml

$ gem install gemi

First, execute gemi without any options:

$ gemi

then ~/.gemirc is created. Edit it for your environment.

Example:

rubys: 
  - name: 'MRI 1.8'
    command: 'gem'
    install_options: '--no-format-executable --user-install'
  - name: 'MRI 1.9'
    command: 'gem-1.9'
    install_options: '--format-executable --user-install'

First of all,

$ gemi foo

will install the gem 'foo' for all your rubys.

gemi can also uninstall, update, or cleanup the gems.

Just give the names of the gems to gemi.

$ gemi foo bar   (= gem install foo bar)

You can also install gems defined in a YAML file:

$ gemi gems.yml

Example of gems.yml:

gems:
  - name: 'ruby-openid'
    version: '2.1.4'

  - name: 'nokogiri'
    version: '1.4.0'
    install_options: --with-foo

Specify '-d' for "gem uninstall".

$ gemi -d foo bar   (= gem uninstall foo bar)

Specify '-u' for "gem upgrade".

$ gemi -u foo bar   (= gem upgrade foo bar)

Specify '-c' for "gem cleanup".

$ gemi -c foo bar   (= gem cleanup foo bar)

With '--', you can run any gem commands for rubys:

$ gemi -- list --local     (= gem list --local)

The arguments after '--' are passed to each gem command. (Note that 'gemi list' is expanded to 'gem install list'!)

~/.gemirc contains the information about each gem commands.

Example:

  rubys:
    - name: Ruby 1.8
      command: gem
    - name: Ruby 1.9
      command: gem-1.9
      install_options: --foo
      uninstall_options: --bar
      update_options: --baz
      clean_options: --quux

{install,uninstall,update,clean}_options will be appended to the arguments. In this case, the command:

$ gemi a b c

resuls in running these two gem commands.

$ gem install a b c --foo
$ gem-1.9 install a b c --foo

You can specify an alternative gemirc with '-r' (or '--rc').

Example: use myconf.yml instead of ~/.gemirc

$ gemi -r myconf.yml foo bar
