Goedel

Generate activerecord create statements from activerecord data

Installation

Add this line to your application's Gemfile:

gem 'goedel'

And then execute:

$ bundle

Or install it yourself as:

$ gem install goedel

Usage

# assume User is active record model with `id`, `email`, `name`, and `address`
last_user = User.last

pp last_user.attributes
=> {
     "id" => 123,
     "created_at" => Tue, 22 Dec 2015 08:34:14 UTC +00:00,
     "updated_at" => Tue, 22 Dec 2015 08:34:14 UTC +00:00,
     "email" => "goedel@incompleteness.com"
   }

Goedel.goedel(last_user)

# will print out activerecord create statement which can create the data object
my_user = User.new
  my_user.created_at = Time.zone.parse("2015-22-12 08:34:14")
  my_user.updated_at = Time.zone.parse("2015-22-12 08:34:14")
  my_user.id = 123
  my_user.email = "goedel@incompleteness.com"
  my_user.name = "Goedel"
my_user.save

# and then return it as a string

# Not all a record's attributes will show up sometimes, especially those delegated through associations.
# You can force these attributes to show up

# Suppose that the user's address is delegated to a `home` object
# `address` would normally not show up as an attribute, but you can
# force it by adding it in the attributes option like so

Goedel.goedel(last_user, force_attributes: [:address])

my_user = User.new
  my_user.created_at = Time.zone.parse("2015-22-12 08:34:14")
  my_user.updated_at = Time.zone.parse("2015-22-12 08:34:14")
  my_user.id = 123
  my_user.email = "goedel@incompleteness.com"
  my_user.name = "Goedel"
  my_user.address = "123 Incomplete St. Princeton, New Jersey"
my_user.save

# You can also override attribute values

Goedel.goedel(
  last_user,
  force_attributes: [:address],
  override_attributes: {"email" => "hide_email@fake.com, }
)

Use Case

You can generate seed data with goedel

User.all.each do |user|
  File.open("#{Rails.root}/seed_raw.rb", "a") do
    # Use the override_attributes to anonymize user emails in your seed data
    |file| file.puts Goedel.goedel(user, override_attributes: {"email" => "fake#{user.id}@fake.com"})
  end
end

Compatability

Tested with ActiveRecord 4.2.1
